THE DIRECTION OF SUNBEAMS // MAY THE RAINBOW ALWAYS TOUCH YOUR SHOULDER // AUCKLAND ART GALLERY // 2012
Tiffany Singh has worked with communities in India making art projects since 2005. These provide empowering experiences for individuals and have also introduced a collaborative aspect to her art making, enabling her audience to participate, create and share. In 2012 she travelled to Bangalore to work with children who had been orphaned by aids, together the artist and the 3 month children's workshop created the first of these ‘rainbow’ works by drawing their magic place. The children folded their narrative drawings into boats, which were symbols of their hopes and imaginary journeys that were central to the installation. The Direction of Sunbeams was an iteration of this work, which developed over the course of one year. The boats and other origami forms in different colours, formed a time based rainbow made by visitors, these were added to the installation until a full spectrum rainbow appeared.
