LIVING WALL // LUCAS ARTS RESIDENCY // MONTALVO ARTS CENTRE // CALIFORNIA //USA //2013

Inspired by the nature study movement which was a popular education movement in America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Nature study attempted to reconcile scientific investigation with spiritual, personal experiences gained from interaction with the natural world. The walls then become nature studies and spaces for philosophical thoughts to rest. This device has became quite seminal in her work as it directly informed Calling A Circle’s; The Living Dying Wall 2014. The nature study wall is a way to learn and observe surroundings when in residency environments. Requiring the artist to gather locally and observe quietly. Embracing local moses, stone and foreign forms of life, to examine the growth and the spirit of all things. The wall then becomes an additive space of research and reflection that starts to have a conversation with locality and cross pollinate with the residency project enquiry.

This the wall project accompanied the social practice artwork Bells Of Mindfulness whilst on the Lucas Residency at Montalvo Arts Centre.
