PATAKA SHRINE // PATAKA MUSEUM AND GALLERY // 2014

The Pataka shrine accompanied the Wellington iteration of Fly Me Up To Where You Are, protecting the flags and blessing the space. The shrine historically, is there to  show respect for the spirits of the land. With a belief that we must care for the spirits of the land, the spirits are believed to protect us, grant our wishes, and bring good luck and good health. In exchange in the earthly realm the spirits are given shelter, foods and gifts.  This sacred relationship helps transcend concepts into realities and enables us to give thanks to local spirit or guardian of a place. Pataka Art + Museum, which has become the cultural heart of Porirua City, and has developed a reputation for showcasing the best in contemporary Maori and Pacific Arts, as well as contemporary New Zealand, Asian and international arts and culture.
