MAQULA AL HALA WA QUZAH - ON THE RAINBOW AND THE HALO // THE WANDERER // ESPLANADE THEATRES ON THE BAY // SINGAPORE, MAL // 2014
Iris is titled after perhaps the most personable mythic deities to represent the Rainbow. The Rainbow is not the creatrix, nor is Iris, but Iris of the Rainbow speaks to those created by the Mother, who eventually terrifies, abandons or at least disappoints us by becoming the Destroyer (the Storm). Often immediately upon separating ourselves from the Mother, many of us undergo a Storm of spirit, where our basic right to exist, or fit in and care for ourselves is called into question. By looking to the promise in the sky, the light of the sun transforms within the tears in our eyes into the Rainbow, which offers hope, Redemption, and a promise that all of us have a part in creating the world.
Revision Of Optics is a work that focuses on colour and sound vibration which references ancient spiritual practice associated to healing and wellbeing. This colour spectrum is a visual vibrational attempt to reference and awaken the chakras as the energy centres of the human body as perceived by Yoga practice. The artist facilitates the space in a way, which activates the bells with the wind currents on site and therefore turns the concourse into a gentle tinkling instrument. Bells have existed from prehistoric times and are prevalent everywhere in Asia from Bali to Tibet to Malaysia. Their main placement was from the roofs of Buddhist temples. Traditionally used for ceremonial and religious purposes sometimes hundreds or even thousands of these would be attached to a temple to create an orchestral sound from the wind. In accord with Shinto tradition, bells are used to summon nature spirits as well as disperse negative energy from a premise. These concepts paired with materials such as salt and holi powder, flowers and colour therapy permeates the site with vibrational scent and optic frequencies. In using a signature reconstructed rainbow spectrum in the Revision Of The Optics the artist hopes to create an artwork that becomes a vibrational meditation, an explosion of colour thats allows us to feel joy and be immersed in the natural rainbow nature provides for us.
